Today a capital in the European Union, Athens is an ancient capital of the Mediterranean world.  Though it languished for a long time under the control of the Ottoman Empire, Athens today blends the old with the new.  A major boulevard abuts ruins, and it is all overlooked by the glory of the Acropolis.
