We take a lot of things for granted today. One of them that we don’t think too much about is celebrations of birth. With today’s medical knowledge and infrastructure, most children will survive past infancy and into childhood. Before medical knowledge was so advanced, children in infancy could fall victim to many maladies that could sadly claim their lives. Many societies have various traditions to celebrate the child passing different benchmarks where their likelihood of survival was much higher. In Korean culture, one of these celebrations is the 100 day birthday celebration. These memories come from young Benjamin’s celebration of the life he will live and the happiness he inspires as his family rejoices in this precious cycle of life.
